How Pipe Weight is Calculated

The weight of a pipe is calculated using the formula:

Weight = π × ((OD/2)² - (ID/2)²) × Length × Density

All dimensions are converted to millimeters for the calculation. The cross-sectional area (π × OD²/4 - π × ID²/4) is multiplied by the length to get volume, then multiplied by density for weight in kilograms.

Material Densities:

Mild Steel
7,850 kg/m³
Stainless Steel
7,900 kg/m³
Aluminum
2,700 kg/m³
Copper
8,930 kg/m³
Brass
8,500 kg/m³
Titanium
4,500 kg/m³
PVC (Rigid)
1,400 kg/m³
HDPE
950 kg/m³

Example:

For a Mild Steel pipe with:

  • Outer Diameter: 100 mm
  • Inner Diameter: 80 mm
  • Length: 1000 mm
Outer Area = π × (100/2)² = 7,853.98 mm²
Inner Area = π × (80/2)² = 5,026.55 mm²
Cross-section Area = 7,853.98 - 5,026.55 = 2,827.43 mm²
Volume = 2,827.43 × 1000 = 2,827,433 mm³ = 0.002827 m³
Weight = 0.002827 × 7,850 = 22.20 kg
